Yes, it is almost here again.
I'm talking about that red-headed stepchild of a holiday, Valentine's Day. Celebrating this much maligned holiday is as American as apple pie and American Idol, but as of late, it hasn't exactly been the holiday that Americans most look forward to. Believe it or not, one prominent greeting card company has gone so far as to create an anti-Valentine's Day line of cards, and I hear they are selling well.
Let's be honest: Valentine's Day can be painful. Sure, I've been in the Valentine's Day hating crowd myself. The worst part for me had always been standing in the card aisle at the grocery store, shoulder to shoulder with countless other poor saps like me, all wearing the same befuddled expression on our pathetic faces. Pouring over countless Valentine's Day cards, trying to find the right one that she would like, and the right one that I wouldn't feel stupid sending her.
And, when I would finally send one to her, the reaction I would get from her was always sort of, well, anticlimactic. After all of my painstaking deliberation, she would say something like, "Thanks," or "That's nice."
But then, why would she say anything else? I just gave her the same card that her girlfriend probably got from some other sap.
Thankfully, there is a much easier and better solution that works like a Valentine's Day painkiller, and that doesn't involve me setting foot in the greeting card aisle. Now, I send her a card using only my computer and a little bit of creativity. There are several companies that let you send real paper cards from your computer. These services will let you choose a card, customize it to make it personal and special, and then send it with a click of a mouse. They print the card, address and stamp the envelope, and put it in the mail for you.
When I use one of these services, I always change the text on the inside or cover of the card to add her name, which makes it a card printed "just for her". Plus, I often add a photo, which is really easy to do, and have it printed on the inside of the card. So, the card she gets is actually unique, and elicits a much better display of gratitude and affection from her than a generic card from the store ever could.
If only my computer could cook dinner for me, I might actually grow to love Valentine's Day.
